TWINDO

Wind Energy O&M management made simple

ROLE : UX/UI Designer

TOOLS : Figma, Figjam

DURATION : 2 Weeks

DELIVERABLE : iOS Native Mobile App

ABOUT TWINDO

A next generation field service & management system that helps businesses in wind energy O&M to streamline operations, improve collaboration between stakeholders and make diagnostic & predicted analysis with AI.

THE CHALLENGE

To create a digital reporting feature for field workers in the wind energy sector. This innovative tool will function as a customizable form builder, streamlining the process of gathering precise report data from wind turbine technicians. Its aim is to collect the most accurate report data from wind turbine technicians with the shortest and easiest part.

RESEARCH

Firstly, we started to familiarize ourselves with the wind energy sector and the project management problems facd by them. We realised that the wind energy industry is bleeding due to consistent overbudget and delayed projects. These setbacks stem from several factors.

Project Management Inefficiences

Limited Time

Inadequate Software Solutios

Higher Operation Costs

Unconsolidated data from varied sources

98% of energy mega projects are delayed and exceed their budget, resulting in an average cost of delay reaching 30% of the total Project cost.

57% of onshore wind project experience delays, with an average delay costing 7.7% of total project cost.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

Twindo currently dosen’t have any direct competitors and is a pioneer in the industry. When comparing it to it’s indirect competitors, we realised the main USP of Twindo.

Global Operations

On shore & Off shore wind fields

Custom Digital Reporting structure

AI Cost & Time Prediction

AI forecasting Field Service Success

Easy to Integrate and Use

Understanding our Users

Given the specialised nature of the wind energy sector, it was of atmost importance to understand wind turbine technicians and their current system of reporting and their experiences with it. For this we decided to interview 7 field workers between the ages of 30 and 54 years. These workers valued the technical facets of their roles, expressing reluctance towards paperwork. They aim to efficiently demonstrate their work's quality without having to spend too much time on, but if their reports are of poor quality, they don’t get paid and it might even ruin their reputation.

“ We spend 1/2 to 1 hr (depends on which platform) sometimes even
2 hrs submitting the reports. “

Mateusz, 30

“ During the work day you pack tools for work scope and work in stages. At each stage we have to take pictures & record everything. “

Bevan, 50

“ Sometimes you just want to rest after work. “

Tom, 35

“ We have to submit the reports during the morning or at the end of the day.“

Mikkel, 34

USER PERSONA

Meet Erik, an embodiment of our interviewees. A wind turbine contractor with 5 years of field experience, he shuttles between the Netherlands and on-site locations. His days are long and demanding and the work is dangerous. Although his family worries about his safety, he loves his job. But when it comes to all the paperwork & reports to be submitted, he is exhausted and would prefer to just concentrate on his technical skills.

Whats the problem ?

Wind turbine workers with minimal IT knowledge need to find a way to find relevant information,
fill-in, organise and submit necessary reports on
a daily basis because
current processes are time consuming, complicated and leave room for error.

IDEATION

Once we had defined our problem, we started brainstorming using the questions we asked ourselves during the user journey map .

How might we make the process of submitting a report easier ?

How might we help him organise the different types of reports ?

How might we assure that the reports are submitted successfully ?

With these questions, we came up with multiple feature ideas that were then segregated using the MoSCoW method, thus helping us concentrate on the most important features.

Personalised Dashboard

Customisable Timesheet

Push Notifications with Weather Updates

Twindo Gallery

Safety Documents & Regulations

Report Filters

Weather updates

Transcribe Voice Notes

Chat with Colleagues

MINIMUM VIABLE PRODUCT

A feature for Twindo app that helps wind turbine technicians consolidate documentation and digitally submit reports - A personalised dashboard, option to add customisable timesheet, a twindo gallery, push notifications for weather updates and an update on submitted reports.

This would ensure that the users feel motivated to fill in their reports and at the same time be assured about submitting the correct reports, thus create a positive & transparent experience.

USER FLOW

Timesheets are filled on a daily basis by wind turbine technicians. This user flow gos through the process of filling up a timesheet for a particular day and logging in multiple activities during a work day and submitting it. An overview of the submitted reports and their status can also be reviewed.

WIREFRAMES

The app's design is deliberately uncomplicated, embracing minimalism and user-friendliness. Given its technical nature and functional orientation, intricate details take precedence. Users are seamlessly guided through every step, ensuring a smooth experience without overwhelming them.

User-Focused Simplicity for Technical Efficiency

Learning through testing and Iteration.

“Zingy”, Easy to use application.

While adhering to the existing green tones within client’s brand identity, we infused a touch more richness by integrating illustrations and gradients. This approach successfully brought about the desired effect.

Home screen showing personal dashboard with an over view of the current projects of the user.

Radial Nav bar with commonly used shortcuts (can be personalised)

Pop up page asking for the project details inorder to fill in timesheet from the radial Nav bar.

Calender page to choose date of form and start logging activities

Selecting the type of Activity to be added from drop down menu

Adding relevant details to selected category from drop down menu

Depending on the activity selected, various types of form are available. They can be added to the timesheet

A preview of the Twindo Gallery. Pictures to be added to the form can be selected

Multiple types of activities can be added for a particular day

A preview of your timesheet and authorization before submission

Loading screen for reports that are being constantly updated

List of submitted reports with status preview.

PROTOTYPE IN ACTION

WE ARE NOT DONE YET!

As an iterative process, we can not stop here with the design process. Being a very technical and highly important app, this feature needs to go through excessive testing and iteration to make it efficient for use. Some of the next steps that we have to go through are :

Testing with field workers while on the job.

Explore the addition of an emergency ‘SOS’ feature

Responsive design for tablet
